Fire simulation

So-called “natural fire models” in accordance with DIN EN 1991-1-2 serve to determine the critical temperature stress for a component, including temperature distribution. The calculation is usually carried out on the basis of engineering methods for fire protection or using CFD simulations. The use of natural fire models is an option for verifying structural fire protection both in new builds and in existing buildings that are undergoing a change of use. The temperature stress in the event of a fire can also be determined for infrastructure projects, which are subject to particular requirements.

As part of a research programme conducted by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), MFPA Leipzig GmbH has been assigned the workstream “Quality assurance and repair concepts for the use of polypropylene fibre-reinforced concrete to improve the fire behaviour and spalling of the inner shell of road tunnels”. Over the next 20 months, this R&D project should answer unresolved questions relating to the use of polypropylene fibre-reinforced concrete in road tunnel construction. In the first instance, this will include analyses of the technical properties of concrete and questions related to its long-term resistance and the possibility of using polypropylene fibre-reinforced concrete to repair road tunnels on federal highways. The R&D project involves experts from the MFPA divisions Building Materials, Structural Fire Protection and Research, Development, Modelling.
